MADISON, Wis. – For the 15th consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report ranked UW Health the top hospital in Wisconsin on its Best Hospitals list.
Nine UW Health specialties ranked among the nation's best
UW Health also has nine adult specialties nationally ranked, and 20 adult procedures and conditions received the highest ratings.
This recognition reflects dedication and expertise demonstrated every day across UW Health, according to Dr. Peter Newcomer, chief operating officer, UW Health.
“Earning this recognition year after year is something we’re incredibly proud of,” he said. “It speaks to the talent, innovation and commitment of our teams, who continue to advance patient care, research and outcomes across our health system.”
U.S. News & World Report evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals as part of the Best Hospitals rankings. In addition to the No. 1 hospital ranking in Wisconsin, nine medical and surgical specialties were ranked among the top 50 in the nation, up from eight last year. They include cancer, now at 40 after being ranked 56 last year; diabetes and endocrinology, which ranked 10th in the nation; gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; obstetrics and gynecology, which was ranked No. 12 in the nation; orthopedics; pulmonology and lung surgery; and urology. This year, cancer care and orthopedics are newly ranked for UW Health, and cancer and orthopedics are ranked No. 1 in Wisconsin.

UW Health earns high-performing ratings for 20 procedures and conditions
U.S. News & World Report also reviews hospitals for 23 conditions and procedures for patients age 65 and older. This year, UW Health received the highest possible rating of “high performing” for 20 procedures and conditions, up from 18 last year.
The procedures and conditions ranked high performing at UW Health include abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, back surgery (spinal fusion), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, diabetes, ear, nose and throat surgery, gynecological cancer surgery, heart attack, heart failure, hip fracture, hip replacement, kidney failure, knee replacement, leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, lung cancer surgery, pneumonia, prostate cancer surgery, stroke, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
Rankings reflect strength across multiple UW Health facilities
The specialty care rankings include data from University Hospital, East Madison Hospital and maternity care data at UnityPoint Health – Meriter.
“This recognition is a reminder that people in our community have access to nationally recognized care,” Newcomer said. “It also should be a source of comfort to everyone in Wisconsin to know they can receive some of the best care in the country for some of the most complex conditions close to home.”
