Valley View Mall opened its doors at 9:30 a.m. July 31, 1980, in La Crosse. Here’s a look back at the early years of the city’s biggest shopping destination.

1935 collapse of Mississippi River bridge at La Crosse led to changes

The collapse spurred attention to aging bridges on both sides of the river. The La Crosse bridge was opened in 1891, a year after and similar in construction to the bridge at Winona. Both bridges were found deficient and in 1939 the Cass Street Bridge was opened between Minnesota and La Crosse, followed three years later by the interstate bridge at Winona.

Steve Cahalan: Pro Image Sports to open in Valley View Mall

A sports apparel store is coming to Valley View Mall, another store is about to expand, and improvements have been made to two other mall locations.

Steve Cahalan: Hallmark store in Valley View Mall to close

Feb. 24 is expected to be the last day for the Jeri’s Hallmark store in Valley View Mall, said Tonya Whitewater, who manages both that store and the Jeri’s Hallmark in the Crosseroads Center shopping center in Onalaska.
