Tree City
For the past 26 years, the City of Fitchburg has received Tree City USA designation, earning Sterling Tree City status. To maintain the Tree City designation, the City of Fitchburg celebrates Arbor Day and has a tree board, a tree care ordinance, and a community forestry program with a $2 per capita annual budget. The City has also received 11 Growth Awards through the Arbor Day Foundation. Growth Awards are an annual recognition for demonstrating higher levels of tree care and community engagement during the calendar year.

Both of these designations reflect the City of Fitchburg's dedication to conserving, protecting, and enhancing valuable natural resources.
Heritage and specimen tree inventory
The Parks and Forestry Department has a citywide heritage and specimen tree inventory. We are trying to locate the trees of the original survey and identify new ones. Identification of these trees makes the community aware of these historical and natural resources and brings us one step closer to their protection. To date, we have identified 115 heritage trees and 93 specimen or potential specimen trees. To view these trees, check out our Inventory Map.
Please help us identify additional heritage and specimen trees! Contact us if you are interested in determining if you have heritage or specimen trees on your property.
Heritage trees
Heritage trees are trees estimated to be 200 years or older, as determined by their size. White and bur oaks must have a trunk circumference of at least 10 feet (measured at 4.5 feet above ground level) and pin, black, and red oaks must have a trunk circumference of at least 11 feet to be classified as heritage trees.
Specimen trees
Specimen trees are trees 15 inches or greater in diameter that display superior quality and characteristics when compared to trees of the same species.
