Virtual meeting set on US 12 Schoolhouse Creek bridge

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is holding a virtual public involvement meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 30, to share details about a proposed project replacing the bridge carrying US 12 over Schoolhouse Creek south of the village of Fairchild in the Jackson County town of Cleveland.

Built in 1945, the bridge is nearing the end of its service life. To address this, WisDOT is proposing:

• Removing the existing deteriorating single-span steel girder bridge
• Constructing a new single-span prestressed girder bridge
• Reconstructing US 12 on both sides of the structure
• Installing new guardrail

During construction, US 12 will be closed between County YY and County HH. Through traffic, including large trucks, will be detoured via County YY, Front Street and County H.

Construction, anticipated to take two to three months to complete, currently is scheduled for 2027.

Motorists are reminded that using handheld cell phones in Wisconsin work zones is illegal. Alerts and updates provided via these sites are not intended for use while driving. When driving, your focus should always be on driving.
