ROCKFORD, Ill. — UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital was recently recognized as a top performer for saving and improving lives through organ and tissue donation.
During a ceremony held in Madison this week, staff from UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital were honored with the Silver Award of Hope from UW Organ and Tissue Donation. The award recognizes the comprehensive work of the care team in facilitating organ donation with compassion and efficiency, according to John Patterson, critical care unit manager, UW Health in northern Illinois.
"It is a tremendous honor to serve donor heroes and their families," he said. "This recognition reflects the unwavering dedication of our entire critical care team to honor donor decisions and deliver hope to those awaiting a life-saving gift."
The award is based on performance across three key measures: True conversion rate, organs transplanted per donor and referral rate. The true conversion rate calculates the percentage of medically eligible donors who become actual donors. Organs transplanted per donor assesses the average number of organs recovered from each donor or an observed-to-expected transplant outcome. The referral rate measures the percentage of patients who met criteria to be referred to UW Organ and Tissue Donation for evaluation. Hospitals earn a gold, silver or bronze award by meeting all three, two or one of these metrics, respectively.
"Hospitals play an essential role in ensuring the success and integrity of organ donation," said Michael Anderson, executive director of UW Organ and Tissue Donation. "We commend the teams at UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital for their commitment to honoring these generous gifts and bringing hope to others."
