At The Beacon, every day begins with a simple but powerful purpose — to meet each person with dignity, respect and the support they need to take their next step forward.
For Craig, that step began in February of 2025.
At 77 years old, Craig had lived a full and hardworking life. He spent more than four decades as a semi-truck driver and had been sober for over 30 years, a testament to his strength and resilience. But after losing his wife to cancer in 2017, the years that followed brought deep loss, instability and eventually homelessness. Craig preferred the solitude of the outdoors over crowded shelters, navigating each day on his own terms even as he faced serious health challenges, including multiple heart procedures, mobility limitations and the need for ongoing eye care.
When Craig came to The Beacon, he was not looking for a place to stay. He was looking for a place to access support, connection and a path forward.
The Beacon staff met Craig where he was, building trust and working alongside him to coordinate the care and services he needed. Through partnerships with community providers, Craig was connected to medical outreach and began receiving care through UnityPoint Health – Meriter. Staff also supported him in following through on the next steps identified by his Porchlight, Inc. case manager, while helping initiate services through the Aging and Disability Resource Center to explore long-term care options.
Each step required patience, coordination and trust, but Craig did not have to navigate it alone.
With continued support, housing applications were completed, services were aligned and a plan began to take shape. Then, in April of 2026, Craig reached a milestone that once felt uncertain — he was placed in permanent supportive housing.
Craig’s journey reflects what happens at The Beacon every day. It is not just a place for immediate needs, but a place where individuals can stabilize, connect to critical resources and move forward in a way that honors their story, their choices and their dignity.
Because growth happens step by step, with the right support at the right time.
At The Beacon, those steps are made possible by a dedicated team and a compassionate community that believes every person deserves the opportunity to move forward.
