Whether you are a leisure traveler looking for a fun weekend away, a homebuyer searching for that perfect place to live, a traveling nurse or a game day aficionado, The Saddlery Madison in downtown Madison combines the comforts of home with thoughtfully designed, modern amenities.
Here, guests enjoy a historic landmark hotel that seamlessly merges sleek industrial design with the charm of its rich past — whether it’s for one night, a week, a couple of months or a year.
“You get the flexibility and services of a hotel, but the space and comfort of a high-end apartment,” said Jen Yakimicki Guimond, vice president of commercial services at NCG Hospitality, the entity that owns and operates The Saddlery Madison.
The industrial building was originally constructed in 1907 for The Madison Saddlery Company, a regional distributor of horse saddles and leather goods. As the demand for saddles and harnesses waned during the rising popularity of cars, the building became home to various grocery, hardware and furniture businesses. Today, the four-story timber frame building now features loft-style suites, exposed brick, original wood floors, 25-foot ceilings and plenty of industrial charm.
Located on the 300 block of East Wilson Street in downtown Madison, the building has been reimagined by NCG Hospitality, complete with a rooftop deck that — like the rooms — provides stunning views of Lake Monona.
Opened in 2024 as The Saddlery Madison, the hotel pays homage to its history. In addition to the preserved brick walls and original windows, guests can glimpse marks on the ceilings from the overhead pulley system used during its manufacturing heyday. An antique safe door in the basement adds mystery to the space, though guests can admire it from afar.
The Romanesque-style building, designed by architect Alvan Small, is listed on the State Register of Historic Places.
The building features studio, one- and two-bedroom units with spacious and fully equipped kitchens; a 24/7 state-of-the-art fitness center; in-unit laundry facilities and breathtaking views. The pet-friendly property is just steps from iconic downtown foodie hotspots, hidden cafes and eclectic music and sports venues. The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Capitol building are within close proximity as well.
Guimond said storage units in the lower level of the building are available for any guest needing to store luggage, bikes, even furniture during a relocation.
“It’s really a nice bonus for our guests,” she said. “It provides peace of mind to them knowing they can stay here for a length of time that fits their needs, on their own schedule.”
Renting one of the 46 available apartments is easy. Guests can book directly from The Saddlery Madison’s website, call to book a reservation or go through a multitude of third-party booking sites. A digital entry code is forwarded to the guest 24 hours prior to arrival. While there is no traditional front desk, the property’s general manager greets all guests upon arrival. The lobby has soft, flexible seating and a long communal table.
