After more than five decades in business, Pizza Pit is still serving up Madison’s favorite pizza pies. A true hometown original, the pizzeria chain blossomed from humble beginnings on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus in 1969.
“The business started when a group of guys got together to address the fact that there wasn’t any pizza delivery service in Madison,” said the company’s president Robby Bisbee.
Pizza Pit claims to have produced more than 35 million pies through the years. The secret to its longevity? Attention to detail and fresh ingredients sourced regionally as much as possible.
“We make all of our dough from scratch at least every other day,” Bisbee said. “We also have our own 100% Wisconsin cheese blend, and we make our own sauce from scratch, too.”
Supreme pizza
On a menu that features dozens of specialty and customizable classic pizzas, Bisbee says the Deluxe Combo option with pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions and green peppers is the most requested order.
The beloved pizzeria is famous not only for their pizza, but also for their chicken wings, Madison-made Athens Gyros and “Pit Stix” topped with garlic butter, cheese and a sprinkle of secret seasonings.
Other items include hot-oven toasted sandwiches, chicken strips, fish and shrimp dinners, fries, onion rings, jalapeño poppers, mozzarella sticks and cheese curds (this is Wisconsin, after all) to fulfill almost any customer craving.
Pints of locally made Chocolate Shoppe ice cream are the perfect sweet finale to any Pizza Pit meal.
Inferno Wings
Pizza Pit must be doing something right. The business is a repeat Wisconsin State Journal/Madison.com People’s Choice Award winner, earning top-spot recognition in four categories this year for Best Pizza, Best Wings, Best Lunch and Best Caterer.
“That kind of recognition really means a lot to us,” Bisbee said. “We want everyone to know that we’re here and we’re putting out good food. We’re always grateful for the support of our loyal customers.”
Pizza Pit owners believe in being good community partners as well, frequently getting involved with local sports organizations and donating to many causes, in addition to employing lots of high school students. Back to school and fall football season is a particularly busy time for the pizzerias each year, as is spring and summer lake season.
“We launched two new locations this year in Cambridge and Milton, and we’re looking at a couple others to open by next spring,” Bisbee said.
