GEICO insurance company was founded in 1936 by Leo Goodwin along with his wife Lillian to provide auto insurance directly to federal government employees and their families. They took a risk during the great depression to start up, what is now one of the most successfully respected companies in the nation.

Leo Goodwin’s theory was if he lowered costs in the company by marketing directly to targeted customer groups, he’d be able to pass along lower premiums and still earn a profit. With Lillian by his side, she was a bookkeeper by profession and took on the accounting tasks also underwriting policies, set rates, issue policies and market auto insurance to GEICO’s target customers, federal employees, and the top three grades of noncommissioned Military officers.

In 2009, GEICO welcomed its 9 millionth policy holder and is currently servicing coverage to drivers in all 50 states.
