Ganser Company has been a family-owned business since its establishment in 1939. The company, initially known as Ganser Home Improvement, was founded by Ernest Ganser, a former dairy farmer from Lodi, WI. Ernest moved his family to Madison in 1939 after their prize dairy herd was destroyed by tuberculosis. Already fifty years old, Ernest found it difficult to work for anyone else, so he decided to start his own shingle roofing company. In the beginning, the company employed five men, including Ernest's sons, Hugh and Lenard. Shortly after World War II, Hugh returned to Madison to work full-time for his father. At that time, Hugh concentrated on selling and applying shingles and aluminum siding for home builders. In 1950, Hugh purchased the company from his father, Ernest. Even after Hugh Ganser purchased Ganser Home Improvement, Ernest kept working as a shingle roofer until his retirement at age 72!

The company began to flourish under Hugh's direction, and soon became the dominant shingle roofing company in Madison and Dane County. The company focused heavily on new construction, yet maintained residential re-roofing as well. In the early 1960's, the existing warehouse and office complex was built to house Ganser Home Improvement Company, and in 1962 the company became a corporation. By the late 1970's, Ganser Home Improvement Company had grown to a 35-man crew. In 1974, Dennis Ganser, one of six sons and two daughters, joined the firm.

Dennis, fresh out of Stout State University, joined the roofing crew in order to re-learn the trade of roofing. Following his work on the crew, Dennis worked primarily as a salesman and manager until Hugh's retirement in 1981. When Dennis purchased the company in 1981 he began to departmentalize it into workable divisions, and began to maneuver it into commercial and industrial roofing. During that same time, Ganser Roofing Systems was developed to market commercial roofing. Ganser Home Improvement Company was separately maintained for residential shingle re-roofing and re-siding, and the corporate name which included both divisions, was changed to Ganser Company Inc.

The newest addition to the Ganser team, Travis Ganser, joined the company full-time in 1995. Travis worked for the company cleaning, keeping warehouse, roofing, siding, and selling since he'd been about 8 years old. Currently, Travis serves as Ganser Company's shingle and flat roof estimator, as well as its Vice President.
