Prep girls golf photo: Madison Edgewood celebrates its return to the WIAA Division 2 state tournament

The Madison Edgewood girls golf team shows off its WIAA Division 2 sectional championship plaque after earning its 19th state tournament trip in 20 years with a victory in the Edgewood sectional on Tuesday at Yahara Hills Golf Course.

The Madison Edgewood girls golf team is back where the Crusaders have long proven they belong.

Edgewood shot a four-player team score of 357 on Tuesday to win its own sectional at Yahara Hills Golf Course.

The victory gave coach Peggy Gierhart’s Crusaders a berth in the WIAA Division 2 state tournament, after Edgewood missed qualifying for state as a team last year.

Last year’s miss ended the Crusaders’ string of 18 consecutive team state berths — a run that included 13 championships and two runner-up finishes.

The state tournament will take place Monday and Tuesday at University Ridge Golf Course.

Even though Edgewood didn’t qualify for state as a team last year, then-freshman Grace Welch made it — and wound up finishing third individually with an 83-81—164 score.

On Tuesday, she shot an 11-over-par 83 to finish second individually in the sectional, three strokes behind junior Annie Balduzzi of team runner-up La Crosse Aquinas.

Rock Valley Conference Jefferson missed out on a team state berth, finishing third at 383. Eagles senior Alexa Owen qualified for state as an individual, shooting 85.

Also qualifying individually was Wisconsin Dells junior Allison Anderson, who shot 86.
