Houtson-practice notes

Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Bart Houston (13) cools off between reps during the team's first fall practice at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wis., Monday, Aug. 8, 2016. M.P. KING -- State Journal

The University of Wisconsin practiced through some heavy rain Saturday morning. Here's what we saw from Camp Randall Stadium:

-- Fifth-year senior quarterback Bart Houston looked like the better passer for the second straight open practice in his competition with redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook.

Houston completed 13-of-23 passes during team drills that included a perfect 73-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Love, but he also overthrew an open Robert Wheelwright in the end zone on third down during redzone drills.

Houston also connected with A.J. Taylor and Troy Fumagalli for deep passes during 7-on-7 drills.

Hornibrook completed 13-of-21 passes during team drills. He threw an impressive deep ball to George Rushing that went for a 67-yard touchdown but also threw two interceptions on the day.

-- Tight end Troy Fumagalli could be a redzone weapon for UW this season. He caught two different 6-yard touchdowns on the same fade route during redzone team drills.

-- Hornibrook's interceptions were thrown to safety Keelon Brookins and cornerback Caesar Williams. Williams, a true freshman, has made a habit of picking off passes during his first fall camp with the Badgers.

-- Running back Corey Clement took reps as a kickoff returner with Natrell Jamerson (left leg) out. Clement could still be an option on kick or punt returns this season.

-- True freshman Garrett Rand appeared to be the most likely No. 2 nose tackle this season but Billy Hirschfeld has also taken reps at the position over the last couple days.

-- Inside linebacker T.J. Edwards, who injured his left foot this summer and has not practiced this fall, still has the goal of playing against LSU on Sept. 3. He is no longer in a walking boot, but defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox said Edwards will need at least some practice time before playing in a game.

-- Left tackle Ryan Ramczyk left the field with a left leg injury Saturday and was wearing a boot on his left foot after practice. Outside linebacker Vince Biegel also sat out with a left leg injury. Neither injury is expected to be serious, though, per a UW official. Here's the rest of the Badgers' injury report (new injuries are bold):

  • OLB Vince Biegel (left leg)
  • WR Quintez Cephus (right leg)
  • OL David Edwards (left shoulder)
  • ILB T.J. Edwards (left foot)
  • WR Henry Houden (head)
  • CB Natrell Jamerson (left leg)
  • OL George Panos (right shoulder)
  • OL Logan Schmidt (head)
  • RB Bradrick Shaw (right leg)
  • ILB Mason Stokke (head)

  • WR Kendric Pryor (left arm)
  • FB Austin Ramesh (right leg)

Safety D'Cota Dixon and offensive linemen Dan Voltz and Jacob Maxwell were given the practice off for rest. Wide receiver Jazz Peavy and running back Taiwan Deal were still wearing yellow, non-contact jerseys.
