University of Wisconsin men's basketball coach Greg Gard was named the 2016 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year, the award committee announced on Monday.

Gard, who took over for former Badgers coach Bo Ryan in mid-December and had his interim tag removed in March, led UW to a 15-8 record and a berth in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.

The Phelan award is presented annually to the top coach in division I men's basketball and has been given out since 2003. West Virginia's Bob Huggins won the award in 2015. Ryan won the award in 2008.
