Badgers fans race to Twitter to critique Wisconsin's loss to Maryland Terrapins
Wisconsin State Journal reporter Jim Polzin was flooded with responses after asking Badgers fans on Twitter what they thought of No. 6 Wisconsin's 70-64 loss to the Maryland Terrapins in a Big Ten battle Monday night at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Here's what fans were saying after the Badgers' five-game winning streak came to an end:
Asleep at the wheel
One look at the energy on the Maryland bench vs the Wisconsin bench says it all. Maryland was fired up all night and Wisconsin was sleepwalking. In this league you will lose if you don’t bring it. That said this was a classic let down spot after Fridays physical & emotional win

Stiff competition
Yep. Conference is loaded. State down by 20 in Minny at the half. Any given night, anyone can win. I told my buddy that UW is a very good team and could end up around .500 in the conference. A game or two over could win it. The teams are that close talent wise.

Clock management key
Let down wasn't unexpexted, and it's obvious to look at the effectively 8-17 FTs.
— Nick P Bassill (@NickPBassill) December 29, 2020
At some point though, Gard MUST be a better "timeout" playcaller. To start both halves we never got the ball inside the arc. Down 5 with ~:50 left, we ran the clock all the way down. Painful.
No time to waste
Lack of energy caused no ball movement on offense and lazy defense. Got a lot of waking up to do before our next game.

Stark reminder
Maybe they thought hey we best Michigan St., we are bad ass. And forgot it is very early in the season . Got play hard every game.

Fueling the fire
Maryland deserved to win, but if Wisconsin doesn't use that celebration on the court after the win as motivation when they play again in a month than I don't know what else will motivate them. There's a reason Turgeon was trying to get them off the floor.
— Josh (@LaserShow03) December 29, 2020
Missing in action
Kept getting beat on D
— Rob (@finleyr27) December 29, 2020
Night-and-day difference
Maryland had hustle and energy all night, largely helped by their vocal and enthusiastic bench. Those factors swung the pendulum significantly, combined with lackluster defense and poor shooting across the board by UW, but especially at the line.

Changing with the times
2020 is a year to adapt to the circumstances. No home crowd a visiting bench can take home field court make it their advantage. We saw that tonight. Take that enthusiasm to Minnesota and get that win.

Waiting in the wings
Anyone ever gonna ask why Davis doesn’t have a bigger roll offensively? Stands on the wing way too much.
— Don Nelson (@ptskipper33) December 29, 2020
No excuse
Their inconsistency is maddening for a team of seniors.
— Eric Eichelt (@EricEichelt) December 29, 2020
Matchup miscues
Davis needed more playing time in the second half, maybe he wouldn't have been as exposed as BD was.
— Todd Bethe (@todd_bethe) December 29, 2020
Potter sat a lot...I trade his offense for Nate's playing time down the stretch...
Head-scratcher
Ouch, Maryland looked a LOT more athletic than we did! They took us off the dribble whenever they wanted. I'm confused with the rotation tonight, Potter sitting when we needed offense? Trice and Davidson struggled on D against those big guards.
— Doug B (@DBsportsfan) December 29, 2020
Enough already
Completely ridiculous given their win Saturday. This team takes one step forward, then two steps back. really obnoxious.
— WSRanter (@WSRanter) December 29, 2020
Rolling over
Another flat start and it gave Maryland life that they carried through the whole game
— Joe Ojanen (@JoeFromStCloud) December 29, 2020
Just a poor effort
Beats the alternative
It's the BIG! There will be a lot of games like this. No worries, learn from it and move on.

Just happy we have a season! #OnWisconsin
Do you have to ask?
Just substitute Bob for Jim pic.twitter.com/7QyuK4BV2f

Brought down from the inside
Interior defense was awful and MD had too many open looks for 3’s. Missed FT’s were also a killer.
— Kurt Sagendorph (@ksagendo) December 29, 2020
No dodging that
Missing FTs and giving up layups seems like a bold strategy

Not the first time
Defense needs to improve with bigs. Same D as Marquette game. Need to move your feet. Also hustle after ball goes up on offense.
— Wallace Jones (@wrj2134) December 29, 2020
It could happen
The Big Ten is a good basketball conference. If you miss free throws and shoot poorly, you might lose the game.
— gospeedracergo (@bdgrdoc) December 29, 2020
Nothing that can't be fixed
Missed free throws, close out defense was not good, Maryland's energy. #OnWisconsin
— Justin Matsick (@JustDeac) December 29, 2020
Take your time
I'll let you know after the Badgers adjust to Maryland's 3-2 zone.
— Kyle Cooper (@SportsCoop66) December 29, 2020
Time to shake things up
Didn’t have the needed energy or enthusiasm to win. Recommendation: move Ford and Potter to the bench for next game and start wahl and Davis.
— Michael Burger (@Burgscom) December 29, 2020
On the outside looking in
Lack of game in the paint was pretty disturbing..
— Scott (@CCSO228) December 29, 2020
It is what it is
They shot very very well , they are young probably under estimated . No fans makes Kohl less intimidating unfortunately
— Sete (@sete1331) December 29, 2020
Hungry for more
Reuvers/Potter not getting fed the ball enough. Would love to see some offense designed for Davis.
— DAM444 (@DieselAndMe) December 29, 2020
Roller-coaster ride
Free throws. This team can be so good and then so bad as well 🤷♂️
— Tyler Spietz (@SpietzT) December 29, 2020
Taking a step back
Frustrating. Beat Michigan State at Breslin and then lose at home to Maryland.
— Zach Stratton (@Zach_Stratton29) December 29, 2020
The future is now
The Badgers might consider leaving the 50s behind and explore the way the game is played today.
— Andy Bachman (@AndyBachman) December 29, 2020
Not a good look for Bucky
Frustrating to watch the starting five play like freshman instead of an experience group.
— Daren Helmenstine (@helmenstine34) December 29, 2020
The silver lining
At least this loss wasn’t the refs fault

A big "if" apparently
If we make 50% of our 3 foot shots we win easily
