Wisconsin State Journal reporter Jim Polzin was flooded with mixed responses after asking Badgers fans on Twitter what they thought of Wisconsin's 75-74 victory over Penn State in a Big Ten tournament showdown Thursday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
Here's what fans were saying after the Badgers clung to life in the conference tournament after seeing an 18-point lead vanish in a flash:
Hold that thought ...
I was all set to say only glowing things...— Nick P Bassill (@NickPBassill) March 12, 2021
Middle 25 minutes was some of the best basketball I've seen this team play: good ball movement, in rhythm (+confident) jumpers, attacking the rim, and mostly competent defense.
The other 15 minutes was the opposite of that. 🙃
Warmest of welcomes
Excellent way of putting it!! You must be a sportswriter!!!— Russ O'Leary (@russoleary) March 12, 2021
Tick, tick, boom!
What'd ya expect?
Honestly nothing crazy surprising with the last 5 minutes or out of character for this team. A win is a win. Let’s beat Iowa?— Jessica Garvey (@j_garvey1213) March 12, 2021
Looking to their leader
A massive collapse like that does not reflect well on the coach. And they're damned lucky they didn't call a foul on that inbounds pass.— Stu Levitan (@StuLevitan) March 12, 2021
Every. Single. Time.
The pieces are there
They showed the flashes of really good basketball for most of the game, but down the stretch went on one of those horrific stretches that have killed them all year. Man it would be fun to see them out it all together for a game or two.— Paul Bergum (@paul_bergum) March 12, 2021
No time to ease up
Best effort they’ve had in along time. Good to see the team play well again. I hope Gard recognizes that they can’t get conservative and start trying to run the clock with 8 minutes left. They got away from the game plan. They also need to work on beating the trap and the press.— Michael H. Hyman (@MCPSsportypsych) March 12, 2021
It's all that counts
Survive and advance. A win is a win in the tournament— Jack Anthony (@jamchese) March 12, 2021
They usually run out clock for 40 minutes.— Soflex Math (@chrisneumer) March 12, 2021
Only a matter of time
Davis is a superstar. Can’t wait to see how much better he will get next year— Chris Salemi (@Sal42) March 12, 2021
Closing down early
A snapshot of why this team struggles. They shut down their hot offense with 6 minutes to go and it should have cost them the game.— Eric Hewitt (@ericchewitt) March 12, 2021
True to form
That’s about as Wisconsin of a win as you can get this season— Barry Nelson (@BarryNelsonWI) March 12, 2021
No arguments here
Yep— Brian Hipp (@Brianhipp) March 12, 2021
Piling on the proof
Just more evidence of how horribly mediocre they are, as if we needed more.— Wockenfuss😷 (@Johnny_Wock) March 12, 2021
Embracing the fresh start
Brand new season. Badgers shot well, defended well, and this team doesn’t panic. Yes they played the clock game with a lead and Penn State battled back, but UW is advancing to play Fran and the boys.— Jeff (@bluehighway15) March 12, 2021
Plan of attack
Let Jonathan Cook. Start Trice, Davis, Davison, Ford &Reuvers. Tyler becomes the energy guy and Potter is instant offense off the bench. Herculean effort by Penn State. Stop playing footsie and take their soul. No more prevent offense.— Steve Kenyon (@Sjkenyo) March 12, 2021
Two thumbs up!
Great game. Shot the ball better than they have in a very long time. Great energy. Playing against a desperate team who knows this is their last game if they lose. Great win.— Joe Kuester (@JCKuest) March 12, 2021
It's all good
It's not all sunshine and roses
Well coached senior laden teams don’t give up 17-2 runs to under .500 teams in tournament play. Good kids, yes. Well constructed basketball program with ability to execute in crunch time, no.— Bruce Goldman (@BruceGoldman9) March 12, 2021
Better than all the rest?
Best team ever!! Don’t understand when we get pressed and break it, why they don’t attack the hoop with the 3 on 2 advantage...you put teams away that way— aarondentz (@aarondentz) March 12, 2021
Ahh, but it counts as a win
Felt like a loss— TL (@tbone1934) March 12, 2021
Shredding the paper
On paper Penn State doesn’t look great, but they were fighting hard and would have given a lot of teams a tough game tonight.— Megan (@stamiam89) March 12, 2021
Get well soon
Was never comfortable no matter how big the lead. PSU always plays hard and doesn’t give up. If potter is hurt, Badgers have no chance vs Iowa.— Charlie Grant (@Ctg2223) March 12, 2021
We've been here before
Perfect encapsulation of the season... so much promise yet so much mediocrity. Glad we won... but man that was a roller coaster.— Mark Wolfgram (@markwwolfgram) March 12, 2021
Don't even ask
When you’re hot, stay hot. I’m generally a Gard defender, but he put the brakes on the offense and played not to lose from the 8:00 mark on. Ask Mike McCarthy how often that works ...— Amber Janssen (@JMMjanssen) March 12, 2021
But that's no fun!
It's March. Survive and advance that's it. No more whining from fans— Brian Gile (@briangile) March 12, 2021
