The root of the disheartening curricular changes to be implemented at UW-Stevens Point is the steadily deepening inequality that has transformed American life in recent decades. The campus recently announced plans to get rid of liberal arts majors while adding more science-related programs.
If this trend goes unchallenged, then an all-sided education that nourishes the human spirit, fires the imagination and awakens one to the possibility of real solutions must be rejected in favor of one that aims at the opposite.
The grim future depicted long ago in Fritz Lang’s film “Metropolis” threatens to become ours.
