Veteran honored by honor flight -- Norbert Schuster

Veteran honored by honor flight -- Norbert Schuster

They call it the Badger Honor Flight, and what a great honor to be afforded this flight. I applaud the dozens of volunteers who were so gracious and cordial in greeting us with a "thank you for serving," which really set the tone for the day.

A big thank you to my charity givers, Don and Theresa of Schuster's Fun Farm in Deerfield, who are perennial charity givers to the honor flight.

Our red carpet treatment continued in Washington as two fire trucks gave us veterans a wonderful water salute. The citizens of Washington, D.C., lined up to greet us with a "thank you for serving," and local police units gave us a non-stop escort.

We had time to visit all of the war memorials, but our main destination was the World War II Memorial. I couldn't help feeling a bit of nostalgia creeping into my thoughts at the sight of the imposing monument.

Back in Madison, the atmosphere was awesome! Overwhelming would describe the theme of this memorable day.

A special thank you to all who send me cards, and to my son, Erick -- my best friend -- who pushed my wheelchair the entire day, except near the end when an Army sergeant took over.

-- Norbert Schuster, World War II veteran, Waunakee
