This State Journal editorial ran on Aug. 28, 1864:
With the first week in September, the most important presidential canvass that has ever taken place will open.
The issues at stake are of the most vital concern. They involve nothing less than the existence of the Republic.
A determined effort will be made to place the government under the control of men friendly to the rebel leaders and ready to conclude a dishonorable and disastrous peace.
To counteract and thwart the purpose of the rebel sympathizers in the North, an active and earnest canvass and a thorough presentation of the issues of the struggle must be made by those who sustain the administration in its efforts to put down rebellion and secure an honorable and lasting peace.
The State Journal will take an active part in the discussion of the great questions that enter into the canvass, and will spare no effort to render effective service in the Union cause.
