MADISON — The Madison Public Library Foundation was the largest beneficiary of the over $1.2 million in grants awarded by the Madison Community Foundation on Thursday.

Madison Community Foundation announced nine grants totaling $1,233,144, including $500,000 for the new Central Library. The grant is the second largest capital campaign gift in the foundation's history, said Robin Reid, a spokeswoman for charity.

Other beneficiaries included Literacy Network, $45,000; Urban League of Greater Madison, $20,000; Vera Court Neighborhood Center, $54,000; Goodman Community Center, $50,000; Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, $35,000; Clean Lakes Alliance, $37,500; Kennedy Heights Community Center, $30,000; and Middleton Cross Plains Area School District Endowment, $35,000.
