Evers Foxconn

State Superintendent Tony Evers on Monday launched his first campaign ad of his Democratic candidacy for governor, criticizing Gov. Scott Walker's proposed $3 billion incentive package to lure electronics maker Foxconn to Wisconsin.

The first ad from state Superintendent Tony Evers’ Democratic gubernatorial campaign blasts the $3 billion incentive package Republican Gov. Scott Walker has proposed for a Taiwanese electronics giant.

The radio ad, which airs in the Milwaukee, Green Bay and Wausau markets, also ties the Foxconn deal to President Donald Trump, who helped announce it last month in an event at the White House with Walker and Foxconn CEO Terry Gou.

“The Donald Trump-Scott Walker $3 billion deal for Foxconn might sound good, until you look at the fine print,” Evers says in the ad.

The ad criticizes the deal for lacking requirements that Foxconn workers be Wisconsin residents, exempting the project from state environmental protections and for taking 25 years for the state to begin to recoup its investment. The deal calls for giving Foxconn $2.85 billion in refundable tax credits tied to the project over the next 15 years.

“Sounds good for Foxconn, but what’s in it for the rest of us? Just think if we invested that money in our schools instead,” Evers says.

Evers made his candidacy official last week.

State Rep. Dana Wachs of Eau Claire, Milwaukee-area businessman Andy Gronik and Barneveld newcomer Bob Harlow also are officially seeking the Democratic nod for governor in 2018.

Walker is widely expected to announce soon that he will seek a third term.

Republican Party of Wisconsin spokesman Alec Zimmerman said Evers’ stance shows he’s putting “political futures ahead of Wisconsin families.”

“It’s the height of hypocrisy for Madison bureaucrat Tony Evers to claim support for working families while campaigning against 13,000 good-paying, family-sustaining jobs,” Zimmerman said.
