Dane County will help fund a project to acquire 13.1 acres for Fireman’s Park in Verona that will double the size of the park.

The county intends to contribute a $20,500 grant for the $80,200 needed to buy the land, which includes a third of a mile of Badger Mill Creek, with the city of Verona covering most of the project’s cost, the county said Thursday.

Verona plans to remove invasive woody plants from the property and replace them with open meadow and natural walking paths to access the creek, which feeds into the Sugar River.

Improved access

“This is another important part of our efforts to increase access to outdoor recreational activities,” County Executive Joe Parisi said.

Verona intends to partner with Trout Unlimited, the state Department of Natural Resources and the Upper Sugar Watershed Association to improve stream banks on the land.

The park is at the intersection of Paoli and Bruce streets and includes a former quarry that was converted into a swimming hole.
