UW-Madison’s vice chancellor for research and graduate education announced Thursday that she would step down and return to the faculty.

Marsha Mailick had been on temporary leave since January, according to the university. Norman Drinkwater will continue his role as interim vice chancellor until a permanent replacement for Mailick is found.

“I’ve made the difficult decision to step down from my role,” Mailick said. “Leading the research enterprise of such an amazing university has been a great privilege.”

Mailick was appointed as the first vice chancellor for research and graduate education in March 2015 after the reorganization of the graduate school, the university said. She was the top research officer on an interim basis for about 11 months prior to her appointment.

“Marsha has been an effective and innovative leader, introducing exciting new initiatives and providing steady leadership for our research community,” said Chancellor Rebecca Blank. “Her efforts to realign and energize a large and complex program of research have helped position UW-Madison for the future.”

At the Waisman Center, which researches developmental disabilities and neurodegenerative diseases, Mailick plans to continue research focusing on behavioral phenotypes of developmental disabilities during adolescence and adulthood and the impact on parents and siblings. Mailick was the director of the center from 2001 until she took the vice chancellor position.

Mailick is a professor of social work and an affiliate of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health in the pediatrics department. She is also an internationally recognized expert on autism and other developmental disabilities.
