A rally that took place on Wednesday was organized to support a victim of a recent alleged sexual assault that occurred off of school grounds between two East students. Lilyian Jenkins, a senior at East and one of the organizers for Friday’s walkout, said the Friday event was a strike for a list of demands meant to help students feel safe at school.
Hundreds of students staged a walk-out and rally on the front lawn of East High School on Wednesday in an effort to call attention to what they called an inadequate response by school administration to allegations of a recent sexual assault between two students.
The renaming process for James Madison Memorial High School cleared another hurdle Thursday as the ad hoc committee charged with the task concluded a public hearing that was rescheduled in September following technical difficulties.
The Madison School District and La Follette High School administrative officials are investigating the use of racist language and the creation of a meme that showed a student holding an Airsoft pellet gun, according to an email sent to families Tuesday.
Policy regarding the use of cameras on school property had not been updated since 2001 and recent incidents, including the discovery of hidden surveillance cameras at East, raised the need to update several outdated board policies, including this one.
"Unfortunately, there have been some isolated incidents in the state recently involving threats to the personal safety of board members," a statement from WASB read. "Such threats cannot and should not be tolerated."
