Fitchburg man who was beaten with baseball bat dies

A Fitchburg man who was beaten with a baseball bat has died, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said. Ryan M. Smith, 20, died Saturday morning at UW Hospital.

Koalton Peterson, 18, was tentatively charged Friday with attempted first-degree intentional homicide after Smith sustained skull fractures and lung injuries early Tuesday morning on the 400 block of Oak Valley Road in Mount Horeb.

Dane County Court Commissioner Todd Meurer set Peterson’s bail at $1 million on Friday.

Assistant District Attorney Rachel Sattler delayed formally charging Peterson on Friday because "it is likely that an actual homicide charge may be issued shortly," she said.

Meurer has scheduled another bail hearing for Tuesday.
