A Waunakee man who witnesses said was driving all over the road Wednesday night was stopped and arrested for his alleged fifth drunken driving offense.

Robert Ripp, 34, was taken into custody at about 7:20 p.m. on North Stoughton Road near Highway 30, Madison police said.

Witnesses told police Ripp lost a large piece of plywood out of the bed of his pickup truck, the plywood almost causing a crash on Highway 30 when the motorist following Ripp had to brake hard to avoid hitting the wood.

Police were called because Ripp allegedly was running stop signs and was driving across lanes of traffic.

"He left Highway 30 and was stopped by police just as he began to head south on Stoughton Road," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

Ripp also was tentatively charged with operating a vehicle on a highway with the load dropping, sifting, leaking or escaping from the vehicle.
