A man died and a woman was critically injured when their motorcycle collided with a deer Saturday in the town of Mazomanie, the Dane County Sheriff's Office said.

The 61-year-old man and a 60-year-old female passenger were thrown from their motorcycle when the crash happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Highway 78 about two miles south of Highway Y, the Sheriff's Office said. Both of them were unresponsive when first responders arrived.

The man, who was driving the 2001 Harley-Davidson, died on the scene, and the woman was taken to a hospital by helicopter with life-threatening injuries, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Neither of them had helmets on during the time of the crash, the Sheriff's Office said.
