A Madison man who allegedly stole a car Tuesday morning crashed into two cars and got pinned in the stolen car, lighting up a cigar as he waited to be rescued.

Jeramie McClain, 28, was extricated from the stolen car and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. He was arrested on tentative charges of hit and run, reckless driving, auto theft and operating while impaired, second offense, Madison police said.

It all started when a woman on Judd Street was warming up her car, and a stranger walked up.

"He came along and took her car," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain. "She tried to confront him but he said, 'I need this.'"

McClain allegedly drove at speeds up to 90 mph on Stoughton Road, sideswiping one car before rear-ending another car in the 1800 block of the thoroughfare.

"The second car was sent through the grassy median, across a frontage road and came to rest in the parking lot of the Blooming Grove Fire Department," DeSpain said.

As for the suspect, he was pinned inside the car he allegedly stole.

"As officers arrived he lit up a cigar," DeSpain said.

Nobody was seriously injured.
