A man throwing punches at a patron of a State Street restaurant was arrested early Thursday morning.

Philemon Dillard, 46, Madison, was taken into custody and tentatively charged with battery and disorderly conduct, Madison police said.

Officers went to Pizza Di Roma, 313 State St., at about 1:15 a.m. Thursday after getting a report of a man picking fights with diners in the restaurant.

"When officers arrived, they witnessed the suspect throwing punches at a patron," said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

Dillard had been approached three times by police earlier in the evening because he had been yelling profanities at passersby on State Street, DeSpain said.
