South Side shooting scene

Police respond to the scene of a shooting Wednesday night near the intersection of Waunona Woods Court and Lake Point Drive on Madison's South Side.

A 24-year-old man was in “extremely critical condition” after being shot in the back of the head Wednesday night on Madison’s South Side, Police Chief Mike Koval said, and the alleged shooter was in custody.

Officers were sent to 9 Waunona Woods Court shortly before 7:40 p.m. for a report of a shooting victim, Koval said. The victim and the 36-year-old male suspect know each other, and the shooting apparently stemmed from a conflict between the two, Koval said.

Witnesses told police the suspect fled the area and tried to steal a vehicle to escape in, Koval said. He then entered an apartment building about a block away in the 6400 block of Bridge Road and went into a maintenance room, Koval said.

“(He) was attempting to barricade himself when our officers intervened and extracted him,” Koval said.

He said the alleged shooter had superficial cuts and was taken to a hospital after being placed in police custody. The suspect would face a minimum tentative charge of attempted homicide, Koval said.

Koval said witnesses saw the alleged shooter with a handgun, but police have yet to recover a weapon.

He said there was more than one gunshot reportedly heard but couldn’t confirm how many bullets were fired.

Dane County Board Sup. Sheila Stubbs, who lives in the area, said she was collecting nominating petition signatures when she heard about the shooting and saw one male victim lying in a parking lot.

“People were running everywhere. Police officers had their weapons pulled,” Stubbs said. “I’ve been here since 1993, and I’ve never seen this before. It was chaotic.”

Waunona Woods Court is off Lake Point Drive near the Beltline.

“My prayers go out to the victim and their family,” Stubbs said.
