Madison police car squad

A man fired a gun at a grave-site funeral service Friday afternoon on Madison's Far West Side, Madison Police said.

The man shot into the air around 1:45 p.m. at Sunset Memory Gardens, 7302 Mineral Point Road, and then pointed the weapon at mourners at the site, spokesman Joel DeSpain said.

Detectives believe the man was acquainted with some of the people attending the ceremony, DeSpain said, and it was likely not a random event.

The mourners fled to their cars and drove away, DeSpain said. The shooter got into a white sedan, he said.

The man was described as being in his 20s, black, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing between 120 and 140 pounds, with short hair, and wearing white pants and a white short-sleeved shirt.
