
A robber fired a shot in a hotel stairwell on Wednesday night as the victim fought back, Monona police reported.
Officers were sent to the AmericInn, 101 W. Broadway, on a report of shots fired in a stairwell at the hotel, Chief Walter Ostrenga said in a statement.
Investigators determined that a strong-arm robbery had occurred and when the victim attempted to recover his property a single shot was fired and the robber fled on foot, Ostrenga said.
Officers located a single shell casing in a stairwell and determined that no one was struck by the bullet, Ostrenga said.
Police believe the robber and victim know each, but neither was located, Ostrenga said.

A former Portage woman charged last year with cashing in a $25,000 lottery ticket that she stole from the convenience store where she worked was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to fraud.
As part of a plea agreement, a forgery charge against Jessica N. Surratt, 32, was dismissed, and Assistant District Attorney Dan Hess and state Assistant Public Defender Svetlana Taylor agreed to recommend the two-year term of probation to Dane County Circuit Judge John Hyland.
The term will be in addition to one year of probation that Surratt received in Columbia County Circuit Court in September 2018 for retail theft, for taking the lottery ticket in 2018 while working at the Market Basket in Portage.
81-year-old man killed in North Side shooting; suspect hospitalized, police say

An 81-year-old man was killed after a North Side shooting, while the suspect is hospitalized, Madison police said.
The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victim as Nang Yee Lee, of Madison. Lee died at a hospital on Monday from homicidal violence, according to preliminary autopsy results.
The suspect is a 38-year-old who lived in the same building and is hospitalized for a medical condition, police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.
Suspect taken into custody after shooting on North Side leaves person in critical condition, Madison police say

A suspect was taken into custody after a shooting on the North Side left a person hospitalized in critical condition, Madison police reported.
Authorities were dispatched to an apartment in the 1800 block of Northport Drive about 9:15 p.m. on a report of a person down, Lt. Kipp Hartman said in a statement.
Arriving officers were directed to a suspect who possibly had a gun, and were able to take the person into custody outside the apartment building, Hartman said.
Officers also found a person in a nearby apartment who had been shot, and that person was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, Hartman said.
Footville man arrested for 20-plus burglaries across southern Wisconsin, authorities say

Thousands of dollars in stolen property — including musical instruments stolen from a UW-Madison building over Thanksgiving weekend — was recovered in an investigation that resulted in the arrest of a Footville man for more than 20 burglaries, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office worked with the Rock County Sheriff’s Office and police departments from Madison, UW-Madison, Sun Prairie, Fitchburg, the state Capitol, Janesville and Albany in the case against Raymond M. Sanchez III, 37, who was being held in the Dane County Jail on multiple tentative charges of burglary, Dane County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said.
Special East Washington Avenue traffic enforcement nabs dozens, 1 driving 126 mph in 55 mph zone, Madison police say

Special East Washington Avenue traffic enforcement efforts resulted in four arrests, 64 tickets and 65 warning tickets, with one driver clocked at 126 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone, Madison police said.
The effort with the State Patrol came in response to community complaints about speeding, reckless driving and racing in the East Washington corridor, police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.
Three of the four arrests were three for impaired driving, and one was for drugs, DeSpain said.
In addition, several motorists attempted to elude law enforcement, including one who crashed, DeSpain said.
‘Parking rage’: Knife-wielding woman flees when other driver calls 911, Madison police say

A case of “parking rage” that involved a knife-wielding woman left a Winnebago Street resident shaken, Madison police reported.
The woman told police she wanted to pull into an underground parking garage in the 2500 block of Winnebago Street about 4 p.m., but could not because another car was blocking the entrance, and after waiting several seconds, she hit her horn, police spokesman Joel DeSpain said in a statement.
The other driver waved her around, and as she passed, she could see the woman driver of that vehicle was quite angry, DeSpain said.
The Winnebago Street resident parked in a stall, and saw the other woman walking toward her car while wielding a pocket knife. She said the woman made slashing motions as if she was going to puncture her tires and also appeared to want to fight, DeSpain said.
That prompted the woman to call 911, and the other motorist fled, driving off before officers arrived, DeSpain said.
Man arrested for battering woman holding baby, injuring police dog, authorities say

A man was arrested for battering a woman holding a baby and injuring a police dog at a town of Madison apartment, police reported.
The armed man had left the scene when officers arrived at the scene, town of Madison Police Chief Scott Gregory said in a statement.
A 27-year-old woman who is in a relationship with the man, Larry Simmons, said he came into the apartment and they argued. She said she was holding her 4-day-old baby when Simmons hit her in the face while holding a handgun in his other hand, and he also damaged a computer in the residence, Gregory said.
Police learned that Simmons entered a vehicle a few blocks away and they located the vehicle on Traceway Drive in Fitchburg shortly before 10 a.m., Gregory said.
The vehicle was registered to people who owned an apartment on Traceway and they gave consent for police to search it, Gregory said.
Town of Madison police dog Tonto was sent into the apartment and found Simmons hiding under a pile of clothing in a bedroom. Simmons began fighting with Tonto and both received multiple injuries that required medical treatment, Gregory said.
Suspected cocaine dealer arrested on Far East Side with drugs, gun, $6K in cash, Madison police say

A suspected cocaine dealer was arrested on the Far East Side with drugs, a handgun, and nearly $6,500 in cash, Madison police reported.
Verdell L. Thomas, 20, of Madison, was taken into custody about 8:30 a.m. on a probation violation at a gas station on Nakoosa Trail by the Dane County Narcotics Task Force, police spokesman Joel DeSpain said in a statement.
15-year-old boy arrested as primary suspect in Fitchburg homicide, police say

A 15-year-old boy was arrested as the primary suspect in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Shay Watson in August in Fitchburg, police said.
The teen was taken into custody after a search warrant was executed at a Verona residence, Fitchburg Police Chief Chad Brecklin said.
Police are not releasing his name because he is a minor. He was taken to the Dane County Jail and booked on tentative charges of first-degree intentional homicide and armed robbery.
5 injured when intoxicated SUV driver crashes into Metro bus on West Side, Madison police say

Five people were injured when an intoxicated driver crashed an SUV into a Metro Transit bus on the West Side, Madison police said.
Traffic cameras showed the driver of a Chevy Tahoe blowing through a red light while speeding at Odana Road and Gammon Road and crashing into the bus shortly after 10:30 p.m., Lt. Kipp Hartman said.
The Tahoe hit the bus so hard it left the road and struck a retaining wall, Hartman said.
2 arrested after abandoning stolen Jaguar that ran out of gas on North Side, Madison police say

An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy from Middleton were arrested after abandoning a stolen Jaguar that ran out of gas on the North Side, Madison police reported.
Mavrik D. Culver, 18, has been tentatively charged with operating a motor vehicle without owner's consent, and Keenan T. Parker-Needham, 17, has been tentatively charged with operating a motor vehicle without owner's consent, obstructing and bail jumping, police spokesman Joel DeSpain said in a statement.
With help from witnesses, they were arrested after ditching the 2018 Jaguar worth about $65,000 in the 1200 block of Northport Drive, DeSpain said.
North Side resident suffers minor injury dodging sword swung by neighbor, Madison police say

A North Side resident suffered a minor injury dodging a sword swung by a neighbor, Madison police reported.
The resident of the 1300 block of Northport Drive suffered a cut when he was nicked in the face by the sword, police spokesman Joel DeSpain said in a statement.
The man told police he responded to banging on his apartment door, and when he opened it, he saw a neighbor in the hallway armed with a knife and a sword. The man said the neighbor swung the sword, but he stepped back and suffered only the minor injury, DeSpain said.
Man charged with attempted homicide in weekend Madison shooting

An arrest warrant was issued for a Madison man after he was charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide for a shooting on Madison’s Southwest Side that left another man with gunshot wounds.
Donald C. Smith, 26, is wanted for the shooting of a 41-year-old man in the 5700 block of Russett Road.
According to a criminal complaint, Madison police were sent to the area at about 11 a.m., when a man identified in the complaint only by his initials was found on the ground between two apartment buildings at 5710 and 5714 Russett Road. The man was bleeding from his chest and lower back, and had a graze wound to the side of his head.
WDE Lake Delton man on parole for OWI homicide faces 5th OWI after nearly dying in motorcycle crash, authorities say

A Lake Delton man on parole for OWI homicide faces his fifth OWI after nearly dying in a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon on Interstate 94 in Jefferson County, authorities reported.
Steven G. Batzler, 63, was not wearing a helmet when he crashed his motorcycle on I-94 at milepost 257 after making contact with a construction barrel, Sgt. Scott Zovar said in a statement.
