Man dies in town of Madison shooting

Update: The shooting victim died at UW Hospital. Police have identified a person of interest but no arrests have been made.

A man sustained life-threatening injuries Wednesday in a shooting behind a town of Madison gas station, Police Chief Scott Gregory said.

The shooting was reported at about 8 p.m. at Capitol Petro Mart, 2570 Rimrock Road.

The victim was taken to UW Hospital, Gregory said.

According to a gas station worker, who declined to be named for safety concerns, the victim entered the gas station and made eye contact with another man already in the store. This man said, “Do we have a problem here,” before drawing a gun. The victim turned and run and the shooter followed. The victim was shot behind the gas station.

Bystanders at the scene said they heard between five and seven shots. It was not immediately known how many hit the victim.

The suspect was seen fleeing the gas station west on foot, police said.

Police said that no bullets entered the gas station, but one gas station employee’s SUV caught in the crossfire had its windows shattered.

Police said that the gas station had good surveillance cameras and officers would be reviewing the footage. Witnesses also were being cooperative in the investigation.

“I don’t know what we can tell the community about using guns to deal with these issues they have with other people,” Gregory said. “There’s got to be better ways.”

Authorities are currently working to determine if this incident is related to the other recent shootings.

“I think people have a right to be afraid,”Gregory said. “You have two groups of people who are obviously armed who have issues with each other who are dealing with these issues with guns.

“These young men and guns, it just doesn’t go well together.”
