Columbia County Squad Car tight crop

A Madison man who hit a car in Columbia County Tuesday morning then fled the scene before his car conked out was arrested for his alleged eighth operating while intoxicated offense.

Ronald Garske, 54, was taken into custody shortly after 11 a.m., the Sheriff's Office said.

According to the report, Garske hit a parked car on Rausch Road in the town of Westpoint, then drove further down the road before his car stalled.

"With the help of area resident witnesses and an off-duty law enforcement officer, we were able to locate the suspect who was still sitting in his vehicle," said Sheriff Roger Brandner.

Garske was also tentatively charged with second offense operating after revocation, obstructing justice and hit and run to property.

"I want to extend my appreciation to those area residents, as well as the off-duty law enforcement officer, who were instrumental in assisting the Sheriff's Office in locating and arresting the suspect," Brandner said.

Assisting at the scene were Sauk Prairie Police, Fire and EMS and Lodi Police.
