A Grant County judge has set bail at $25,000 for a Boscobel woman who police say confessed to fatally injuring her 3½-month-old girl on Saturday.
Renae Bellis, 31, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of first-degree reckless homicide and obstructing an officer. She remained in jail Tuesday afternoon, the Grant County Sheriff’s Department said.
Boscobel police were called Saturday to a home on North West Street for a report of a deceased infant. They arrived to find the girl dead, and the Grant County Coroner conducted an autopsy.
The autopsy revealed that the infant died of “blunt force,” which prompted authorities to open a homicide investigation, the sheriff’s department said.
Initial interviews and evidence led authorities to arrest the child’s father, Mark Rand. Rand, 39, was released after detectives conducted a subsequent interview with Bellis.
The sheriff’s department said Bellis was interviewed again when she came to the jail to drop off personal items for Rand. Bellis allegedly confessed during the interview that she was responsible for the injuries to the infant and admitted to lying to authorities the previous day.
Bellis was arrested and charged Monday.
She is scheduled to appear again in court Thursday.
