Dreidel competitions are just one of the activities planned for children and families at Congregation Shaarei Shamayim's community Hanukkah celebration.

Gather with Congregation Shaarei Shamayim for a free family-friendly community Hanukkah celebration 6 p.m. Friday in the Landmark Auditorium, First Unitarian Society, 900 University Bay Drive. Bring a vegetarian dish to pass at the potluck dinner and stay for music and singing, games, crafts for kids, dreidel competition, and more. Latkes and sufganiyot (jelly donuts) will be provided!

Purchase pottery perfect for presents at Madison School and Community Recreation’s (MSCR) Pottery Sale 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at MSCR, 3802 Regent St. The annual sale features a wide range of pricing with more than 1,000 pieces from MSCR instructors, students, and local ceramic artists. Yuletide tales

  • Attend a free performance of “Old Befana” 7 p.m. Saturday at Plymouth Congregational Church, 2401 Atwood Ave. Befana, a cranky, old lady always sweeping with her broom, sees a bright light and a procession one night and is invited to go along to see the Baby King of Bethlehem. Madison musician Ken Lonnquist adapted the Italian yuletide tale of peace and our powers as individuals to make it happen into a musical 31 years ago.
