Hamilton's on the Square, an intimate, handsomely-designed restaurant that opened in August 2015 in the former Blue Marlin space, has closed.
Under its original executive chef, Rob Grisham, formerly of Brasserie V, the restaurant was turning out exceptional food. But Grisham left after a few months to start his own meal preparation and catering company.
Owner Josh Kregness didn't respond to calls or texts, but landlord Scott McCullough said Kregness closed the restaurant, at 101 N. Hamilton St., June 30 with three years left on his lease.
"Wasn't it fantastic?" McCullough said about Hamilton's food at the beginning. "His food was great. He had a great chef."
McCullough said he thinks the quality of the food and service kept going down as Kregness went through chefs. He also had trouble keeping other employees, the landlord said.
There has been some interest in the space so far, but no lease has been signed, said McCullough, whose family has owned the building for 140 years. "It's a good location, so hopefully we can get another good restaurant in there."
