7. International holiday celebrations
Explore Swedish, German, and other international holiday customs at Folklore Village, 3210 County Road BB, Dodgeville, this winter.
Mark the return of light in the darkness of winter during the Swedish Sankta Lucia tradition Dec. 14. Attend the 3 p.m. workshops to make Nordic crafts, help shape saffron buns to be served later, and learn the songs for the evening celebration. A potluck at 5:30 p.m. is followed by the Lucia procession, hot tea and saffron buns, and a family-friendly dance. Children who want to walk in the evening procession must participate in the afternoon workshop. Admission for afternoon and evening is $12 adults, $10 seniors and teens, $8 kids 6-12; evening-only admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors and teens, $4 kids 6-12; children 5 and under are free; family admission for evening-only is capped at $20.
Fifty candles will be lit on a freshly-cut 14-foot evergreen tree Dec. 21 during the German Christmas Tree Lighting. A 5:30 p.m. potluck dinner is followed by the candle lighting, a carol sing, and dancing around the tree. Bring your musical instrument and join in the informal Folklore Village Orchestra! Pre-register for the popular event to save your spot. Admission is $8 adults, $6 seniors and teens, $4 kids 6-12, free for kids 5 and younger, $20 family admission.
