Revenues rose for Sonic Foundry during the quarter that ended Dec. 31 -- especially from customers in Asia -- but the Madison company reported a net loss for the period.

Sonic Foundry had a net loss of $1.2 million, or 28 cents a share, on revenues of $9.1 million for its fiscal first quarter compared with a net loss of $1.0 million, or 24 cents a share, on revenues of $8.7 million for the year-ago quarter.

Billings outside North America rose 55 percent, the company said, because of increased distribution in China and strong demand in Japan for its Mediasite hardware and software, used to stream and archive presentations over the Internet.

Sonic Foundry also said it had $12.2 million in unearned revenue, at least $3.8 million of which is expected to be paid in the second quarter.

The company is projecting billings of $42 million to $45 million for the 2016 fiscal year and earnings between zero and $1 million.
