June is Dairy Month. To mark the occasion, the next few Econ Quizzes will focus on our favorite dairy treats. Ice cream sales totaled $12.8 billion in 2016 and are projected to rise slowly, but positively, over the next few years. The market research company Mintel reports that 86 percent of consumers purchased ice cream in the last 12 months, rising to 90 percent for those consumers who also are parents.

How many pounds of ice cream does the typical American consume in the average year?

A. 10.5

B. 23.4

C. 19.7

D. 52.3

Answer: C. The typical American eats 19.7 pounds of ice cream annually. The majority of ice cream is sold through grocery stores, and not restaurants, with a half-gallon as the most frequently purchased size.
