Pending village approvals, power equipment maker STIHL Inc. will build a new Midwest distribution center on a 10-acre site in the Cottage Grove Commerce Park to serve customers throughout the Upper Midwest.
Roger Phelps, spokesman for the company based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, confirmed Tuesday the new facility will be created by relocating operations from distribution sites in Peoria, Illinois, and Hayward, Wisconsin. All of the employees at those branches -- about 20 -- will be offered jobs in Cottage Grove.
Phelps said many existing employees are expected to accept the transfer offer, with any remaining slots to be filled locally. He couldn't say how many new jobs that might mean, noting the process was just starting.
"The target is for (the new building) to be up and running by November of this year," Phelps said.
Erin Ruth, Cottage Grove's director of planning and development, said the village was expecting the company's site plan application in the next few days.
STIHL makes gasoline-powered, hand-held outdoor power equipment including chain saws for the U.S. and 90 countries around the world. Most products are made at the company's Virginia Beach plant, Phelps said.
