Prep track and field: Lodi boys complete title mission

COLUMBUS — The Lodi boys track and field team has been on a mission since it was prevented from competing in the Northern Capitol Conference championships last year due to a swine flu outbreak at the school.

It was a sour ending to a promising season, especially when the Blue Devils — forced to miss almost a week of practices as well — went on to struggle at their sectional competition and didn’t send a single member to the state meet.

“We finished the season up and they came up to me and just said, ‘Don’t worry about it next year, Coach, we’re going to do it,’ ” Lodi coach Randy Skellenger said. “That fueled the fire. It wasn’t any coaching involved at that point; it was them wanting what they felt was taken away.”

Lodi made up for it in a big way on Tuesday, winning the first conference track title in school history. Having finished undefeated in dual meets, the Blue Devils needed only to finish ahead of Lake Mills.

Showing off its impressive depth, Lodi won the conference meet with 157.5 points, while Columbus was a strong second at 147.

Lakeside Lutheran’s girls team dominated meet with 162.5 points to win the conference title.

Last year’s conference meet was moved back two days, to try to accommodate Lodi. But the prolonged outbreak of the H1N1 virus caused the school to remain closed, so it didn’t matter.

“When I heard they rescheduled (the meet), I was the happiest kid in the world,” said senior Brad Below. “Then when I heard we couldn’t compete in it again, I almost cried, I was so upset.”

Below had T-shirts made, with a pig on the front and the caption, “This year even the swine flu can’t save you.”

Skellenger wouldn’t let his athletes wear the shirts at meets, so they wore them at school.

Lodi had 51 boys come out for the team, the most ever. The Blue Devils traditionally haven’t been strong in the field events, but Jon Groves won the discus title with a throw of 142 feet, 7 inches.

Sprinter Nathan Koziol ran the 800 in a meet last Friday, with his coach telling him it would help him at the end of races. Then he finished off a big day by winning the 200 meters with a furious kick in 23.69 seconds. He also won the 100 in :11.32 and was second in the 400 behind teammate Cade Clark (:51.61).

Lodi won six events and had two placers in seven events. The Blue Devils needed the depth because Columbus pole vaulter Windsor Molnar set a school record with a vault of 13-3 and Delon O’Neil tied a school a record at 6-3 in the long jump.

“They just have a lot of athletes,” Columbus coach Marlin Hensler said of the Blue Devils. “They can put kids in every event. ... They have a whole team and they did a very nice job. It was a great battle. It’s fun to have meets like that.”
