Prep cross country photo: Madison La Follette's Finn Gessner eighth in Foot Locker regional race

Madison La Follette's Finn Gessner, a junior and the reigning WIAA Division 1 state cross country champion, finished eighth in the Foot Locker Midwest Regional at UW-Parkside on Saturday to qualify for next month's national meet in San Diego.

Madison La Follette junior Finn Gessner qualified for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships with an eighth-place finish in the regional meet at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday.

Gessner, the reigning WIAA Division 1 state champion, covered the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 18 seconds and was the top Wisconsin finisher.

The national meet will take place Saturday, Dec. 12 at Balboa Park in San Diego. The top 10 finishers in the regional meet earned spots in the national race.

In the girls race, the only Wisconsin qualifier was Eau Claire Memorial senior Aubrey Roberts, the reigning Division 1 state individual champ, who turned in a time of 17:42 for 5,000 meters.

The regional champions were Jonathan Davis of Oakwood (Ill.) High School, who finished in 14:57 and was one of three runners to break the 15-minute mark; and Taylor Werner of Bloomsdale, Mo., and St. Genevieve High School, who finished in 16:58.
