Mark Johnson grew up as a stick boy for the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team that was coached by his father, Bob. It was the start of a long association with the Badgers, as a record-setting player and assistant coach for the men's team and as head coach of the four-time NCAA champion women's team. UW's Mark Johnson shoots on Michigan State goalie Mark Mazzoleni in the third period of the Badgers' 13-3 victory over the Spartans on Jan. 6, 1979. Johnson scored three times, his fourth hat trick of the season. The three goals gave him 108 for his UW career, tying him with Bert DeHate for team's all-time lead.

UW's Mark Johnson completes a hat trick with a third-period goal past Michigan State goaltender Mark Mazzoleni while Jeffery Barr tries to defend on Jan. 6, 1979. The goal was Johnson's 108th for his Badgers career, tying him with Bert DeHate for the all-time team lead. Johnson added 17 more in his junior season for the UW record of 125 in 125 games.
Future linemates face off
