The road to a fourth straight WIAA Division 1 state boys basketball tournament berth will force Madison Memorial to go a little out of its way if the Spartans get to the sectionals again this season.
The WIAA announced Wednesday that it has secured Mitchell Hall on the UW-La Crosse campus to host a Friday sectional semifinal double-header as well as Saturday's sectional final. The facility has a seating capacity of 2,880 -- or room for 875 more fans than Middleton High School, which has hosted the sectional title game since 2000 and often turned fans away once its gym was full.
Waunakee athletic director Brian Smith had looked into hosting the sectional at the University of Wisconsin Field House for the WIAA. But UW officials indicated they were not interested in hosting non-state tournament events.
Middleton senior Will Hudson, a 6-foot-9 forward, signed a national letter of intent to play men's basketball at Division I Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
Portage pitcher Katie Stilwell will sign Friday to play softball at Division I Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J.
Verona catcher Katie Hendrickson signed to play softball at Division II St. Cloud (Minn.) State.
