Canada says wireless carriers in the country won’t be allowed to install Huawei equipment in their high-speed 5G networks. In announcing the decision Thursday, Canada joined the U.S. and other allies that previously banned the giant Chinese technology company. The U.S. government has been lobbying allies for years to exclude Huawei from new ultra-fast 5G mobile networks over worries that China’s Communist rulers could compel the company to help with cyberespionage. The U.S. has warned that it will reconsider intelligence sharing with any countries that use Huawei gear. The company has repeatedly denied the allegations.

Telecommunications industry groups have ended their bid to block California’s net neutrality law that bars broadband providers from throttling service. In a federal court filing in Sacramento Wednesday, the groups and California Attorney General Rob Bonta jointly agreed to dismiss the case. The move follows a January federal appeals court decision allowing enforcement of the 2018 law. The measure bans internet providers from slowing down or blocking access to websites and applications that don’t pay for premium service. Bonta calls the move a victory that will secure an open internet for California's 40 million residents.
Apple on Thursday reported strong quarterly results despite supply shortages, but warned that its growth slowdown is likely to deepen. The big issues: its struggle to get enough chips to meet demand and COVID-related shutdowns at factories in China that make iPhones and other products. Although its initial results for the January-March period topped analysts’ projections, the good news was quickly eclipsed when management warned of trouble ahead during a conference call. The main takeaway: Apple’s sales will sustain a $4 billion to $8 billion revenue hit because of chip shortages and curtailed iPhone production in China.
