Son documents flood, harrowing rescue of mom

As Hurricane Ian flooded Naples, Florida, one man went to rescue his 86-year-old mom from her home after she had refused to evacuate. He sent photos and short videos to his family, letting them know he was OK. That's how Johnny Lauder ended up unintentionally documenting the whole rescue. His mom Karen had lost a leg and requires a wheelchair. As the waters rose, she called her son for help. Lauder swam, waded and walked about a half mile to reach her, and could hear her screaming as he reached the house. Several hours later, the water subsided enough for him to push her through the streets to safety. In one photo, Johnny Lauder's 86-year-old mother, Karen, is in her home, submerged nearly to her shoulders in black-tinged water, staring straight at the camera, mouth open. In another, she lies just above the water line on a table, wrapped in sheets to warm her. In yet another, she is pushed through the water in a wheelchair, her rescue nearly complete. The photos tell the story of Lauder's journey last Wednesday to save his mother from the home she refused to leave, despite the family's pleading in the face of Hurricane Ian. Before the storm hit, Lauder said his mother " kicked and screamed" and said she didn't want to leave her home in Naples, Florida. "It was a sense of terror and relief at the same time," he said. Lauder said his mother was later taken to a hospital, because she had some infections, but they were treated and she is doing well.
