Dear Editor: I urge my state legislators from the Chippewa Valley to do the right thing — something that the vast majority of ALL Americans want: Get the money out of politics!
It will not only be the right thing to do, it will provide legislators with a chance to show they have the courage to challenge the status quo and do something that really would be a bipartisan effort.
Any legislator not completely beholden to his or her party or special interests' scripts should come together to pass a resolution to hold a statewide referendum on a constitutional amendment dealing with the obscene Citizens United ruling that stated corporations are people and money is free speech.
Rep. Lisa Subeck, D-Madison, and Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay, are leading the way by introducing a resolution that would give Wisconsin citizens the opportunity to weigh in on money in politics via a statewide advisory referendum on Citizens United.
If legislators really mean it when they say they wish to work on bills together and work for the people, they should welcome this opportunity to get on board. If they don't, they will certainly again show their willingness to serve the masters who have the power of the purse and follow the scripts they provide!
