Try 3 months for $3

Even as its unemployment rate dipped to its lowest level since 2008, Wisconsin lost 4,300 private-sector jobs in August, according to preliminary estimates.

It's the fourth-largest monthly jobs loss since Gov. Scott Walker took office in January 2011, according to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Current Employment Statistics program.

The unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a point to 5.6 percent in August, but that figure and the monthly jobs change often can be disconnected.

The state lost 4,200 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector and another 2,600 in educational and health services between July and August.

The largest gains in private-sector jobs were in professional and business services, a sector that has been showing a high degree of volatility in 2014. After losing 1,400 jobs in July, that sector added 2,000 jobs in August.

It was in the public sector, however, where the state had its biggest job growth.

The local government sector, which includes public education jobs, grew by 7,300 jobs in August, the largest one-month jump in that sector in nearly six years.

Those totals, however, don't go toward Walker's campaign pledge — he said he'd create 250,000 private-sector jobs in his first term. The CES figures show Wisconsin with a gain of 112,900 jobs during his tenure and the state's growth rate trailing all of its neighbors except Illinois.
