Dan Carey

Dan Carey, co-founder and brewmaster of New Glarus Brewing Co., has plans to build a distillery. Production likely wouldn't begin until next year but the project would increase the company's diverse portfolio and could create more tourism traffic.

New Glarus Brewing Co. picked up two of the five medals won by Wisconsin beer makers at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver over the weekend.

The Green County-based brewery won gold for its American Blackberry Sour Ale in the Belgian-Style Lambic or Sour Ale category. The brewery, founded by Deb and Dan Carey, also brought home a silver medal in the fruit beer category with its Serendipity, a beer made with cherries, cranberries and apples.

Leinenkugel's, based in Chippewa Falls, won gold with its Canoe Paddler in the German-Style Kölsch category and a silver with its Creamy Dark in the American-Style Dark Lager category. Miller Brewing Co. in Milwaukee won a silver medal for its Miller High Life in the American-Style Lager or Light Lager category.

The competition, in its 27th year and sponsored by the Brewers Association, awarded 252 gold, silver and bronze medals for excellence in 84 beer-style categories. This year's event, at the Colorado Convention Center, featured 201 beer experts from 11 countries evaluating 4,809 entries from 745 breweries from 49 states and Washington, D.C.
