Prescribed burn

Prescribed burns of natural vegetation are starting soon in southern Wisconsin.

The fires of spring will be starting soon in southern Wisconsin.

Four prescribed vegetation burns in Columbia County have been scheduled by the Department of Natural Resources on state-managed land, with the burns taking place over the next few weeks, weather permitting.

The burns will be in the Pine Island, French Creek and Mud Lake wildlife areas and the Dekorra public hunting ground.

Prescribed burns helps in landscape restoration by reducing leaf litter, control invasive plant species, improve wildlife habitat and redistribute nutrients.

DNR staff will determine when conditions are just right for the burns, based on such factors as wind speed and direction and relative humidity.

Local law enforcement and fire departments will be notified of the burns when they are scheduled.

In 2017, the DNR conducted almost 140 prescribed burns in southern Wisconsin.
